Nikki McCray-Penson, a highly accomplished athlete with two Olympic gold medals and a former ABL MVP, has sadly passed away at the age of 51. The news of her death was confirmed by Rutgers University, where she served as an assistant women’s basketball coach last season. McCray-Penson, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the world of basketball.

During her coaching career, McCray-Penson made significant contributions to various teams. She notably worked alongside Dawn Staley as an assistant coach at South Carolina from 2008 to 2017, a period that included the team’s first national championship win in 2017. McCray-Penson’s impact was also felt during her time as a player. She achieved three All-Star selections while playing for the Washington Mystics in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Her dedication to the sport extended until 2006 when she retired, having made a stop in San Antonio during her playing career.

McCray-Penson’s passing leaves behind her husband, Thomas Penson, and their son, Thomas Jr. Thomas, an account manager at Irby Co., has been married to Nikki McCray-Penson for 21 years. He obtained an electrical and electronics engineering degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1995. During his time at the university, Thomas actively participated in the National Society of Black Engineers, showcasing his commitment to both academics and community involvement.

Following his graduation, Thomas began his professional journey at Kendall Electric, a renowned electrical wholesale distributor. He started as an industrial electrical inside sales engineer and diligently worked his way up for 11 years before being promoted to the position of outside industrial sales account manager. In 2014, he made a transition to Englewood Electrical Supply, where he spent three years as an inside sales engineer and subsequently as an account manager. In 2017, Thomas joined the WESCO Distribution team before finding his current role at Irby Co. in 2020. At Irby, he initially started as a services specialist and was later promoted to the position of industrial account manager in 2021.

The McCray-Penson family’s resilience and unwavering support for one another have been evident throughout their journey. Their marriage of 21 years is a testament to the strength of their bond, and they share the joy of raising their son, Thomas Nikson Penson, who recently celebrated his 10th birthday in February.
